Use case

Companions and avatars on your stream

Miso, Nubo, Pipa, Volt, Ren and Aoi react to your voice or to optional local face tracking, and reach the stream through OBS window capture.

Six characters, two ways to animate them

CYPAD ships six animated characters: Miso (cat), Nubo (robot), Pipa (apple), Volt (dragon) and the anime avatars Ren and Aoi. You pick them in Stream mode, and they live in their own window that you add to OBS with window capture.

In Voice-only mode the mouth moves with microphone volume, with noise filtering and smoothing, and the camera never opens. Camera mode uses local face tracking: head orientation, gaze, blinks, brows, mouth, smile and puckered lips.

  • Miso, Nubo, Pipa and Volt, articulated models
  • Ren and Aoi, anime avatars with stylised proportions
  • The window shows the character only, never the camera feed

The real OBS flow

The window is called CYPAD Mascot and you capture it as a window source, with exact title match and cursor capture off. For Twitch or Kick you can broadcast that scene directly.

The window-capture flow is documented with CYPAD 1.1.30 and the anime avatars arrived in 1.1.33; the current version is 1.1.36. CYPAD installs no virtual camera of its own: if another app needs a webcam, that output is provided by OBS virtual camera, which is an OBS feature.

Background and presence on screen

In Stream → Appearance you can pick Black background, an opaque window that locks the position and removes the edit label, or Camera for face tracking. Scaling and framing are then adjusted in OBS, like any other source.

  • Black background for a clean, stable window
  • Transparency or chroma depending on the capture method
  • The system reduced-motion setting is respected

The camera stays on your PC

The MediaPipe Face Landmarker model, its model file and WebAssembly ship inside the installer. Inference runs locally in a separate worker. No audio, video or face geometry is recorded or sent, and the camera is only authorised while the companion is visible and set to camera mode.

If the face is lost for more than 350 ms, the character smoothly returns to a neutral pose and the mouth follows voice volume. Voice mode never opens the camera, and older installations with auto-start migrate to that mode.

Performance and honest limits

There is a single frame in flight, camera up to 30 fps and rendering with requestAnimationFrame, with damping independent of the capture rate. Quality depends on lighting, framing and hardware.

There is no hand or full-body tracking and no VRM import. Nor is every muscle or phoneme promised: voice mode uses amplitude and camera mode adapts the supported expressions to the stylised rig.

Your own images and custom PNGs

If you prefer your own drawings, custom PNGs stay compatible in voice mode with two states, without face tracking. In camera mode the articulated companion you picked is always used.

Companions and avatars are configured in Stream mode, which is part of Pro along with OBS, sounds, routines, global hotkeys and phone control.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a webcam to use the companions?

No. Voice-only mode moves the mouth with microphone volume and never opens the camera. Camera mode is optional.

Does CYPAD install a virtual camera?

No. CYPAD shows the companion in its own window and adds no virtual camera to the system. The virtual camera offered by OBS is an OBS feature.

Which avatars are included?

Miso (cat), Nubo (robot), Pipa (apple), Volt (dragon) and the anime avatars Ren and Aoi, plus compatibility with custom PNGs in voice mode.

Is my camera recorded or sent anywhere?

No. Inference is local, on your PC. No audio, video or face geometry is recorded or sent, and the camera is only authorised while the character is visible in camera mode.

How do I get this into OBS?

The companions-in-OBS guide walks through the full flow: window capture, background, verification and troubleshooting.
